A Japanese student of Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-Guwahati) committed suicide on Thursday.
The student has been identified as Kota Onoda.
He was a boarder of Lohit Hostel of the institute and stayed in Room No E143.
According to sources, the student from Japan came from Gifu University (Gifu Daigaku), a national university in the city of Gifu, Gifu Prefecture in Japan, for higher studies in IIT-G.
“He was a student of the Department of Biosciences & Bioengineering of IIT-Guwahati,” said sources.
Th cause of taking such a step by the student is yet to be ascertained.
Police have started investigation.
This is the second incident of suicide by a student in the top technical institute in the Northeast this year.
On, January 7, 2019, a 20-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh, pursuing B Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) at IIT-G committed suicide.

The B.Tech 4th semester student was identified as Pannem Pavan Siddardha.
Siddardha reportedly committed suicide in his hostel room in the campus by hanging from a ceiling fan.
In September 2018, a first year B.Tech student also committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan.
The student was identified as 18-year-old Nagashree S.C. from Karnataka.
She was pursuing Mechanical Engineering.

She left a suicide note where she had mentioned that she wanted to be a teacher, not an engineer.
Earlier, a couple of students and employee also committed suicide at the IIT-G.

In August last year, a 25-year-old contractual employee, who was identified as Kishor Barua, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his room in campus of the institute.
Sarkar Intekhab Alam, a postgraduate student of the institute committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room in May in 2016.
Sarkar Intekhab Alam hailed from Murshidabad in West Bengal.
In 2014, 19-year-old Tushar Yadav, an Electronics and Communication Engineering student of the institute, was found dead behind his three-storey hostel building.
At least eight cases of suicide have been reported in the institution so far.
