The early trend of counting of Lok Sabha elections indicated that the protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 failed to make any difference in Assam.

While the BJP is leading in 8 seats its  ally AGP is leading in 1 out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats. The Congress is trailing in 12 seats till 12.30 pm.

The Badruddin Ajmal led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) is leading in two seats while United Peoples Party (Liberal) is leading in one seat.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 played a major role in the recently held Lok Sabha elections in Assam and other parts of the Northeast.

Most of the northeastern states witnessed series of protests for months over the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which seeks to grant citizenship to five non-Muslim communities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

While the BJP was supporting the Bill and assured to bring back the controversial Bill if it comes to power, the Congress had vowed to scrap the Bill if the party comes to power.

As of now the BJP candidates are leading in Autonomous Council (Diphu) constituency, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Mangaldai, Nowgong, Tezpur and in Silchar.

BJP’s alliance partner Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is leading in Barpeta constituency.

The Congress, on the other hand is leading only in Guwahati and Kaliabor seats while AIUDF is leading in Karimganj and Dhubri Lok Sabha seat.

United Peoples’ Party (Liberal) led by Urkhao Gwra Brahma is leading in Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency while sitting MP from the constituency and Independent candidate Naba Kumar Sarania is trailing.

“We always had a plus point during the campaign. The BJP organized road shows during the campaigns and hundreds of people came out to take part in the road shows. These people did not come to dance on the streets but to extend their support to the development works initiated by the BJP- led government,” said BJP legislator Shiladitya Deb.
