Every year, during the celebration of Diwali festival, many people get engaged themselves in night-long card-game sessions with family and friends across India.

Folklore has it that it was Goddess Parvati, after winning a game of dice against her husband, lord Shiva, who decreed that gambling on Diwali night would bring prosperity, and with this belief many people celebrate the festival of lights with games varying from teen patti, a local version of poker, to rummy.

Interestingly, the family members of the gamblers prevented and threatened journalists who were trying to get details during a raid on illegal gambling dens in and around Diphu town.

As the local scribes were trying to get details of the case, the family members of the arrested gamblers threatened to smash the phones of the scribes right in front of Diphu Police Station.

Chingthur Club is a well-known illegal gambling den right in the middle of Diphu town, not far from Diphu Town Outpost.

Chingthur Club is a sports club but it is a known fact that it has been tuned into an illegal gambling den with several lakhs of transaction per day.

It has been alleged that the gamblers of the club bribe police and other officials concerned on regular basis and no action is taken against the illegal activities.
