A 16-year-old boy on Thursday night was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Bijni of Chirang district.

The deceased has been identified as Basistha Namodas and was a resident of No. 2 Lakkhijhar area near Bishnupur, Bijni town.

“Basistha and his younger brother and a few others were returning from the market when they encountered a wild elephant, which had reportedly strayed out of the Manas National Park,” sources said.

While others managed to escape, Basistha was trampled to death by the jumbo and his body was later recovered with the help of the local people.

In another incident, a wild elephant damaged several housed in Namgaon and Borbhogia on Thursday night.
