At least 22 people, including 4 Assam Rifles personnel and 10 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) staffers, all having travel history, have tested positive for novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours.
This was the second-highest single-day spike after the first COVID-19 case was detected in Mizoram on March 24, official sources said on Sunday.
Mizoram reported the highest single-day spike on June 10 in which 51 people were confirmed infected with Covid-19.
The total cases in the hilly northeastern state have jumped to 186, of which 56 are active cases while 130 people have already recovered, a statement issued by state information and public relation department said.
The new cases were confirmed at Zoram Medical College (ZMC) on Saturday night, the statement said.
Earlier on Saturday, two BSF jawans belonging to 61 Battalion posted at Lunglei’s Melte have also been diagnosed with Covid-19 at Lunglei civil hospital, it said.
The two jawans have a travel history to Kerala.
The new patients, who were diagnosed with Covid-19 at ZMC on Saturday night included 19 males and 3 females.
They have returned from Assam, Bihar, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur and Jharkhand and have been placed under quarantine since their arrival in the state, the statement said.
Of the 22 patients, 14 are from Aizawl district and 4 each from Siaha and Lawngtlai districts in the southern part of the state.
They are in the age group of 18 to 56.
The 10 NDRF personnel are posted at Lungverh about 17 km from Aizawl while 4 Assam Rifles personnel are posted at Zokhawsang in Aizawl.
While the NDRF men have returned from Manipur, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and Jharkhand, the Assam Rifles personnel have come from Delhi, Assam and Jharkhand, the statement said.
The statement said that the 8 patients from Siaha and Lawngtlai districts have travel history to Guwahati and Delhi.
Barring 3 from Siaha district, all the patients are asymptomatic, it said.
