Guwahati: Authorities will introduce a new traffic management system in Guwahati’s Fancy Bazar from September 1, including a ban on street vending along MS Road and HB Road to ease congestion and improve pedestrian movement.
The decision was taken at a review meeting chaired by Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai at the Kamrup (Metro) District Commissioner’s office, where officials discussed measures to regulate traffic, parking and vending across SS Road, MS Road and HB Road.
Under the new arrangement, commercial vehicles will be permitted on the three roads only between 9 pm and 7 am. Public vehicle parking will also be allowed, while handcarts and pushcarts will continue to operate.
SS Road has also been brought under the broader traffic management plan. However, authorities have not yet fixed a date for enforcing the street-vending restriction there.
Rai directed the concerned departments and officials to coordinate closely during the implementation of the new system and ensure that the measures do not adversely affect legitimate commercial activities.
The administration said the measures are aimed at improving traffic flow, reducing roadside congestion and creating more space for pedestrians in Fancy Bazar, one of Guwahati’s busiest commercial areas.
The new restrictions are expected to bring greater regulation to the movement of commercial vehicles and vending activities while improving overall traffic management in the area.
