Doomdooma: The Doomdooma Regional Students’ Union held a two-hour sit-in near the Gandhi statue in Tinsukia district on Monday, pressing the Assam government to address a series of educational, healthcare, social and civic issues affecting greater Doomdooma and neighbouring areas.
The protesters raised slogans and called for immediate government and district administration intervention on issues they described as urgent public concerns.
After the demonstration, the students’ union submitted a memorandum to the Tinsukia District Commissioner through the Doomdooma co-district administration. Assistant Commissioner Sudeep Gogoi received the memorandum on behalf of the administration.
One of the union’s major demands was the conversion of Bir Raghav Moran Government Model College into a university to cater to the growing higher education needs of students in greater Doomdooma.
The union also sought the upgradation of Doomdooma FRU Hospital into a co-district hospital, citing the facility’s importance to a large population and the need for better infrastructure and healthcare services.
The students’ body also raised concerns over the increasing availability and use of drugs and other intoxicating substances in the area. It called for strict action against those involved in their sale and distribution, saying the problem was affecting young people and contributing to criminal activities.
Among its other demands, the union called for the establishment of a tea research centre in Doomdooma, a multi-level parking facility to ease traffic congestion and two footbridges to improve pedestrian safety.
It proposed one footbridge in front of Doomdooma College at Rupai Siding and another at Don Bosco Tiniali.
The union further urged the district administration and transport department to implement scientific and effective measures to reduce road accidents in Doomdooma and surrounding areas.
Copies of the memorandum were submitted to the Assam Chief Minister, Education Minister, Health Minister and the Doomdooma MLA, seeking timely action on the demands.
The students’ union warned that failure to address the issues would lead to a sustained and intensified democratic movement in the coming days.
All Tinsukia District Students’ Union assistant general secretary Pappu Moran, organising secretaries Manoj Moran and Amrit Pal Singh, Doomdooma Satdal Sahitya Sabha president Deben Deka, Doomdooma Regional Students’ Union president Biraj Gohain and general secretary Samujjal Borah Sonowal, along with other office-bearers and members of the regional and branch units, attended the protest.
