Shillong: Meghalaya’s newly appointed DGP, Idashisha Nongrang said that the police department will tackle the issue of alleged extortion faced by truck drivers on National Highways.

She said that there would be a zero-tolerance policy and the use of “extreme measures” would be taken when necessary.

Nongrang stated it has become “more and more open in the last few years.”

While complete eradication might be unrealistic, she said that her department would attempt to significantly reduce its frequency.

The DGP also addressed the ongoing challenge of illegal coal mining and transportation.

Nongrang highlighted the police force’s adherence to government directives and court orders concerning environmental protection.

Traffic congestion in Shillong was another focus. Nongrang stressed the need for a comprehensive solution, acknowledging the limitations of police intervention alone.
