At a time when Assam government has made tall claims about providing high quality cancer care, a helpless medical student of Assam sent out a nationwide appeal to save one of her dear friends from the killer disease.

Debapriya Dhar, a 1st year MBBS student of Dibrugarh based Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH), in a series of tweets, is asking for financial support to enable her friend, who is also an MBBS student, undergo a very expensive operation.

Abdur Rahman Choudhury, who is suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, has been undergoing treatment at HematoOncology department in Tata Memorial Hospital , Mumbai  for last one year and now doctors have advised him for a bone marrow transplant which  cost around 35-45 lakh.

Debapriya in a tweet said that one of her batchmates Abdur Rahman is battling through a case of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai who in an unfortunate event, lost his father 2 years ago, and as such they are not in a sound financial condition.

“At present, her sister Ayesha Siddiqua Choudhury is struggling for her treatment. He has been undergoing chemotherapy since (sic) last one year but now doctors have suggested him for a bone marrow transplant. This would cost him an amount of around 35-45 lakhs,” she said in another tweet.

As it is not possible for the members of his family to bear such a big expense, his elder sister Ayesha, a final Year MBBS student of Guwahati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) is struggling to raise the money. The students of AMCH have also raised some fund for his treatment but more financial support is needed for the operation.

“It is not possible for the family to pay this hefty amount. We the students of AMCH, Dibrugarh are trying our level best to help him out by providing funds from various sources, but we alone can’t reach that goal,” she further tweeted.
