Police on Wednesday stopped a cultural protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in Imphal.

The protesters were beating drums and raising slogans against CAA and were marching towards Kangla Fort when police stopped them.

People from various walks of life took part in the peaceful cultural protest, which began from Hodam Leirak and marched towards Keishampat to proceed further to Kangla.

“We wanted to offer our prayers to the almighty seeking for the withdrawal of CAA as it is against the interests of the people,” the protesters said.

“Police, however, stopped us in front of the Keishampat Leimajam Leikai and snatched our placards,” they said.

“When the entire Northeast is protesting against CAA, the government should understand that we don’t want the act,” the protesters further added.

“CAA is like the AFSPA– draconian and anti-people,” they added.

Slogans like “Down to CAA”, “Withdraw CAA” and “Save the Indigenous People”, “CAA= AFSPA etc. were raised.
