The Ima market in Imphal in Manipur

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh has inspected the site for the new women’s market (Ima market) coming up at Wabagai in Kakching district.

Singh also interacted with women traders of the existing Ima market at Wagabai and assured them that the new women’s markets coming in different places in the state will provide women with the opportunity to become self-reliant.

The chief minister said that the development of Ima markets in every district of the state is a major step towards empowering women.

Ima means ‘mother’ in Manipuri and ‘Ima markets’ refers to mothers’ market.

“Took a detour from my visit to Kakching Khunou to inspect the site for new Ima Market which is coming up at Wabgai. The development of Ima markets in every district of Manipur is a step towards empowering our women & attaining PM @narendramodi‘s vision of #AatmaNirbharBharat,” N Biren Singh tweeted.

The chief minister recently laid the foundation of two Ima (women’s) markets at Sekmai and Kanglatongbi in Imphal West district.

A total of seven newly established women’s markets are functioning in the hill districts of the state.

Another16 such markets are in the process of being set up in different districts across Manipur.
