Imphal: An angry mob vandalised a student boarding facility in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Saturday night following the suspicious death of a 16-year-old student.

The teenager, a higher secondary student, was found hanging from a tree near the Kangbei Maril River, close to Oinam Bazar under the jurisdiction of Nambol police station, on Saturday evening.

A senior police official confirmed that the mob targeted the boarding facility at Brighter English Academy and set fire to furniture and other property on the premises.

Security forces used tear gas shells and other crowd-control measures to disperse the mob and restore order.

The official dismissed social media claims that the entire facility had been burnt down, clarifying that the damage was limited to furniture and other items outside the building. Security has been tightened in the area to prevent further violence.

The student’s family has alleged foul play and questioned how a minor under the institution’s care died outside its premises.

The relatives have urged the state authorities to order an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Police said a case had been registered in connection with the incident. Heavy security personnel have been deployed around the Nambol-Oinam area to prevent further violence.
