A two-day legal awareness programme was inaugurated at DC Hall of Kangpokpi district on Wednesday, in order to empower women and girls with the knowledge of their legal rights and duties.

Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) under the aegis of National Commission For Women (NCW) organized the programme.

Social Welfare Minister Nemcha Kipgen, Deputy Commissioner Kangpokpi Dr Rangitabali Waikhom, Chairperson K Sobita of Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) led members were present.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Nemcha Kipgen said that the programme is not just to create awareness but to impart practical knowledge about the basic rights provided under various women related laws, thereby making them fit to face the challenges in life.

Women must be aware on utilizing various channels available for the redressal of their grievances.

The roles of courts, MSCW, District Legal Service Authority, Free Legal Aid, Women Help Line “181” is now very important in day-to-day life of women, she added and enlightened women about the role of courts in achieving gender equality; most importantly the concept of public interest litigation is becoming a very important element in today’s life.

In her speech, Chairperson, MSCW, Dr Sobita called upon women to reach out to Manipur State Commission for Women if they come across any injustice meted out to women.

Other MSCW members who attended the day’s inaugural function include Soibam (O) Neelima Devi, Ranjita Golmei and Dr Farida Shah.

Experts are likely to sensitize women and girls about their rights as provided under various laws includes the Indian Penal Code, 1860; The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961; The Prevention of Domestic Violence to Women Act, 2005; The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 etc during the programme.
