The Congress has issued a 3-line whip mandating its MPs in the Rajya Sabha to be present on the day of presentation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB).
The Bill will be put to vote in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
After the CAB had an easy passage in the Lok Sabha, the Opposition hopes to block its passage in the Rajya Sabha where the ruling BJP alone doesn’t have the numerical strength.
The party will need to rely on support from others to get the bill passed.
The CAB, which seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims fleeing persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, has faced flak from opposition with the Congress calling it “unconstitutional”.
Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi described the controversial Bill as an attack on the Constitution.
“The CAB is an attack on the Indian constitution. Anyone who supports it is attacking and attempting to destroy the foundation of our nation,” Rahul said in a tweet.
