Naga People’s Front (NPF) legislator Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu on Thursday has expressed strong reservation over the generalization of tribal festivals as ‘Mini Hornbill’.

Addressing the gathering at the ongoing Sükrünye 2019 Mini Hornbill Festival at Phek in Nagaland on Thursday, Azo was of the opinion that the term ‘Mini Hornbill’ would camouflage the real meaning of tribal festivals, reports The Nagaland Post.

He stressed that in order to promote every tribal festival, one must promote them by their true nomenclature.

He said that the term ‘Hornbill’ used for the annual cultural extravaganza in Kohima has nothing wrong in it as it encompasses different tribal festivals.

He asserted that the original nomenclature of the tribal festivals must be encouraged and the ambiguous term ‘Mini Hornbill’ must be done away with.

He also stressed on the importance of keeping alive the traditions and culture and their preservation in this fast changing world.

Azo also said that Sükrünye was also meant to purify and sanctify oneself. He added that in the modern world, one had to sanctify in Christian way and improvise the culture and tradition that were being revived.

He also stressed on keeping alive certain culture and traditional practices adding that some practices of the modern day world which are against the Christianity should be discarded totally for the betterment of the society.

The closing ceremony of the three-day festival was also attended by Phek Deputy Commissioner Orenthung Lotha as a valedictory guest.

The festival was organized by the State Government in collaboration with CPO.
