Two persons received minor injuries when an unused mortar shell went off on Sunday at Jamugurihat area in Sonitpur district.

Sources said the old mortal shell blew up around 11 am at Batamari village near Rangachukua under Jamugurihat police station in Sonitpur district injuring two persons.

The injured persons have been identified as Batmari Raghu Bora, 48, and Raju Kumar Chetri, 45.

Locals said the shell went off in the heap of soil which was brought to the area for highway construction work from Dekorai area.

It is believed that the mortar cell belongs to Army and was unknowingly brought to place with soil by road construction workers from Dekorai area.

According to police, the Army earlier used the area, from where the soil was collected, as shooting range.
