An awareness meeting against witch-hunting was organised at Jornagra Part-I village in Kokrajhar on Sunday.

The awareness meeting was held after five members of a family were ostracized and ordered to leave the village on the suspected of practising black magic on last Thursday (August 8).

Organised by the Kokrajhar Circle Office, Social Welfare Office, Police administration and All Rabha Studentsโ€™ Union (ARSU) to educate and aware the public about the strict anti-witch-hunting law.

The meeting was attended by locals along with representatives from various organisations.

In his speech, Kokrajhar circle officer Dipann Barman said there is nothing like a witch.

โ€œThese are superstitious beliefs and they have absolutely no basis,โ€ Barman said.

โ€œAccusing someone as a witch and ostracizing them is not acceptable,โ€ Barman added.

Kokrajhar Additional Superintendent of Police Rosy Rani Sarmah said that the law is tough against the people indulging in such practices.

โ€œA person will be imprisoned for life if found to be indulged in such activities,โ€ Sarmah said.

A host of dignitaries including chairperson of Kokrajhar Child Welfare Committee Malati Rani Narzary attended the meeting.
