“The indigenous Assamese people are not opposing the proposed pan-India National Register of Citizens (NRC),” claimed Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Interacting with the media on Thursday Sarma said those who are opposing the new pan-India NRC are those people who are doubtful about the legality of their citizenship.
“The final NRC published in August this year is not correct. Several genuine citizens were left out from it,” he said.
“For correcting the errors of this NRC, we need to have a new one which will have a common base year for every Indian citizen,” Sarma reiterated.
Union home minister Amit Shah on November 20 declared of having a pan-India NRC and said it will be applicable in Assam as well.
The final NRC published in August this year, from which over 1.9 million people were excluded.
