The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has initiated a mega cleaning drive in the city and will penalize a person, especially trade-licence holders found littering the streets with garbage.
The mega cleaning drive has been initiated in support of the ‘Swachhta hi Seva’ mission that was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2019.

The mission is a nation-wide awareness and mobilization campaign to adhere to standards of cleanliness in the country.

Moreover, once the penalty is imposed on a trade licence holder, he would be able to renew his licence automatically only after obtaining a no-objection certificate from the executive engineer of the municipal corporation.

“Under the cleanliness drive, we will penalize trade license holders (licensee) who throw their garbage/ on the roads and their licences will not be auto-renewed if get a NOC from the executive engineer. They will also have to clean the area, which they have dirtied,” said a senior official of GMC.
The divisional engineers of the corporation will decide on the amount of penalty to be imposed and it will also depend on the kind of waste matter dumped on the streets by a defaulter.
