Dhemaji district, bordering Arunachal Pradesh, has received 19 additional companies of central and state armed police as the district gears up for the Assam Assembly election 2021.
Besides, the district has received 8 companies of Sikkim Police.
The companies of central and state armed police have been deployed so that the first phase of polling in the district is conducted in a smooth and peaceful manner.
Dhemaji district will go to polls in the first phase, on March 27.
Dhemaji superintendent of police (SP) Dr Dhananjay Ghanwat informed that the district has been put on high alert for the poll.
He said adequate forces have been deployed at sensitive, hypersensitive and critical polling stations under the district.

“Though we have no input of subversive attempt to disturb polling by external elements, yet we have deployed adequate security covering the sensitive and critical polling stations,” Dhemaji district police chief said.
The Dhemaji SP said the district has so far registered 6 cases of poll-related violence throughout the district but these were not serious in nature.

“We have closed 119 firearms in the district for election period (9 under exemption), and reported to authority for cancellation of one arms license. Hardcore criminals and accused in election cases are under police surveillance,” the Dhemaji SP added.
Meanwhile, joint forces of district police and excise team have seized more than 25,000 litres of country liquor with a huge consignment of IMFL in the district besides cash amounting to Rs 4.35 lakh from Jonai.

The election department of Dhemaji has equipped 178 polling stations with live webcasting facility.
The election department of Dhemaji is all set to facilitate vehicle and other necessary arrangements for old-aged and physically disabled voters on the polling date.
A total of 1,712 polling personnel have been engaged to conduct polling and security arrangement has been made in 80% of the polling stations for the ensuing Assam Assembly election, deputy commissioner Dr Jeevan B. said.
There are 122 hyper-sensitive, 57 sensitive and 46 criitcal polling stations in Dhemaji district which spread in two Assembly constituencies – 113 Dhemaji (ST) Assembly constituency and 114-Jonai (ST) Assembly constituency.
The Assam Assembly election will be held in three phases – March 27, April 1 and April 6.
The counting of votes will be conducted on May 2, 2021.
