At a time when the State has witnessed growth in crimes against women and children, another incident of a minor’s rape has been reported in Udalguri district.

According to information, a 10-year-old girl has allegedly been raped by a married man at Kalaigaon area in Udalguri.

According to reports, 37-year-old Kandarpa Chowdhury, a resident of Jengrajhar village under Kalaigaon Police Station, who is a married man and father of a child, allegedly raped an adopted minor girl of the same village at the latter’s residence on November 17 last.

The family members of the victim child lodged an FIR with the police.

Kalaigaon Police apprehended the accused from a remote village near Khoirabari on Wednesday.

The locals have demanded stringent punishment of the guilty.

In the last week of October last also an eight-year-old minor girl was allegedly raped by a 19-year-old youth identified as Ajhar Ali at Bangalgaon (Batabari) village under Mazbat Police Station in Udalguri.

The accused, who is a mason by profession and was residing as a tenant in the residence of one Gopal Lahkar, had allegedly lured the minor and her five-year-old brother to his room and committed the heinous act before tying the hands of the brother accompanying her.

The victim girl had narrated the entire incident to her parents following which her father lodged an FIR with Mazbat Police.

The police nabbed the accused from his rented shed vide Mazbat P S case no 53/18 under 376 of IPC and relevant section of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

According to media reports, records over a period of six years from 2010 to 2016 in Assam has shown rise in crimes against minors including rapes.

As per reports, 10 per cent of the the rape victims between 2010 and 2016 were found to be minors exposing the safety of girl children in Assam.

In total, 1,200 minors were raped within the period from 2010 and 2016 .

During this period around 1,275 rape cases were registered where the victims were minors.

According to police, the total number of rape cases in this period was alarming at 12,633 in that survey period.

Besides, in that period, nearly 290 minors were also accused of rape, including two gang-rapes, in Assam.
