The entire Northeastern region have witnessed a significant improvement in the law and order situation last year, with the number of insurgency related incidents decreased to 36 percent compared to 2016.
“The year 2017 witnessed the lowest number of insurgency related incidents since 1997,” said a senior Home Ministry official.
Security forces casualties in the region declined from 17 (2016) to 12(2017) and civilians casualties from 48 (2016) to 37 (2017).
According to government statistics, Assam witnessed as many as 246 insurgency related incidents in 2014 and 81 in 2015, 75 in 2016 and 33 in 2017.
Arunachal Pradesh witnessed 33 in 2014, 36 in 2015, 50 in 2016 and 61 in 2017. Manipur witnessed 278 insurgency related incidents in
2014, 229 in 2015, 233 in 2016 and 167 in 2017.
Meghalaya witnessed 179 insurgency related incidents in 2014, 123 in 2015, 68 in 2016 and 28 in 2017. Mizoram witnessed 3 insurgency related incidents in 2014 and 2 in 2015.
Nagaland witnessed 77 insurgency related incidents in 2014, 102 in 2015, 58 in 2016 and 19 in 2017.
According to the statistics, 46 security forces were killed in 2015, 46 civilians were killed and 149 extremists were also killed in 2015. 17 security forces were killed in 2016, 48 civilians were killed and 87 extremists were also killed in 2016. As many as 12 security forces were killed in 2017, 37 civilians were killed and 57 extremists were also killed in 2017.
The Central Government is following a multi-pronged strategy to deal with situation in Northeastern States. The multi-pronged strategy comprises of security-related measures and developmental measures.
“The Central Government is also following a policy of talks with those groups who abjure the path of violence and seek resolution of their demands peacefully within the framework of the Constitution of India,” the official said.
Centre is also supplementing the efforts of the State Governments through various measures such as deployment of Central Armed Police Forces, financial assistance for strengthening of the State Police Forces and intelligence agencies, raising of India Reserve Battalions, rehabilitation package to surrendered persons and other security related expenditures.
