The arrested persons have been booked under The Foreigners Act, 1946.

โ€œThe passport and visa documents of all foreigners staying in the city are being checked,โ€ Rao further said.

The arrest was made a day after the Karnataka home minister Basavaraj Bommai announced of creating a database of illegal immigrants and overstaying citizens in Karnataka.

Recently Bomnai said, โ€œKarnataka is one of the states where across the border people are coming and settling down.โ€

โ€œThere are a lot of issues here. Therefore we are collecting all the information, we will discuss (NRC) with Amit Shah and then go ahead,โ€ the minister had said.

The Karnataka government, however, later decided to create a database of illegal immigrants and overstaying foreign citizens instead of going for an NRC-like exercise.
