Doomdooma: Six years after the anti-CAA protests in Assam’s Doomdooma, the town saw another large gathering on Saturday evening, this time for Zubeen Divas following the death of singer Zubeen Garg.
Thousands gathered at Gandhi Chowk for the programme. Shops and business establishments remained closed, traffic movement slowed and the town’s main commercial centre became a place for people to pay tribute to the singer.
The gathering was among the largest seen in Doomdooma since the anti-CAA movement in 2019, with people from different age groups and sections of society taking part.
Zubeen Garg was also involved in Assam’s anti-CAA movement. In December 2019, he joined protests against the Citizenship Amendment Bill and said the legislation would affect Assam’s culture.
He later took part in a protest at Chandmari in Guwahati, where thousands gathered against the amended citizenship law.
There were no political slogans at Gandhi Chowk on Saturday. People gathered to remember the singer.
As evening progressed, people lit lamps outside homes and establishments. Families, young admirers and people from different generations gathered at Gandhi Chowk.
Zubeen Garg was a well-known singer in Assam, and his music was associated with celebrations, personal occasions, cultural events and public gatherings. His songs were heard in homes, tea gardens, marketplaces and other parts of the state.
People gathered at Gandhi Chowk, where shops remained closed and lamps were lit during the programme.
The gathering was held as part of Zubeen Divas, marking the singer’s death anniversary. People in Doomdooma gathered at the town centre to remember him.
