GUWAHATI: Intense anti-CAA protests have erupted in various parts of Assam, including the capital city of Guwahati.

In Guwahati, students of at least two prominent colleges staged demonstrations against the implementation of the controversial citizenship amendment act (CAA).

Students of Arya Vidyapeeth College protested against the CAA a day after the Centre notified the rules for CAA implementation.

The protesting students of the Arya Vidyapeeth College in Guwahati city of Assam burned pages that had CAA written on it.

On the other hand, students of the B Barooah College also protested against the CAA at the main entrance gate of the institution.

Personnel and officials of the Assam police blocked the protesting students at the gate of the college from venturing out onto streets as part of their demonstration.

Meanwhile, lawyers’ fraternity in Jorhat district of Assam, on Tuesday (March 12), staged demonstration against the central government’s decision to implement the controversial citizenship amendment act (CAA).

Holding placards that read “No CAA” and “We Oppose CAA”, lawyers from Jorhat district in Assam registered their opposition to the controversial law.

Besides lawyers, members of different political parties and organisations also protested the implementation of CAA.

In the adjacent district of Sivasagar, members of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) took to the streets of Sivasagar town in Assam to mark their protest against the law.

Notably, Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi also led an anti-CAA protest of the Raijor Dal party in the town.

Several KMSS activists were detained by the police in Sivasagar district of Assam for taking out the anti-CAA rally.

It may be mentioned here that several political parties and organisations in Assam have raised objection to the central government’s decision to implement CAA.

Students of different colleges in Guwahati city of Assam and lawyers in Jorhat also staged protests against the implementation of CAA.
