Guwahati: Assam Police constable Anil Tai has been booked for allegedly entering a rented house in Gandhi Nagar, Mariani, and assaulting a woman and her family members, including children, following a dispute.

Tai, who is posted in the traffic branch of Mariani police station, allegedly went to Husnara Khatunโ€™s rented accommodation on Monday and attacked the family.

Husnara alleged that Tai shouted at them before slapping and beating family members with a stick. Women in the household were also among those assaulted, she said.

A video purportedly showing the incident later circulated on social media. On Tuesday evening, Jorhat police posted screenshots of its statement on X, announcing that a case had been registered following the social media report and a complaint from the affected family.

The constable was suspended and attached to the Reserve Office (OR) to facilitate an impartial investigation.

Police said the house belongs to Imtiaz Hussain and is occupied by two tenant families. The dispute reportedly began over a switch connected to a water pump. Taiโ€™s daughter is a member of one of the households.

Jorhat SSP Subhrajyoti Bora said the disagreement occurred between the families on Monday morning, while Tai allegedly entered the other householdโ€™s room later that day.

He clarified that although the constable was on duty, the alleged assault was not carried out using his authority as a police officer.

Taiโ€™s daughter approached Mariani police with a separate complaint, alleging that Husnara had tortured her. Police subsequently registered a counter-FIR against Husnara, Bora said.

No arrests have been made in either case, and the police are continuing their investigation, the SSP added.
