Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday chaired a meeting of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) MLAs at the State Secretariat, with discussions centred on governance priorities and the prevailing law-and-order situation.
According to an official statement, the meeting emphasised the need for โcoordinated and decisive action at all levelsโ to restore peace and security in the state. The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of all citizens.
โWe are committed to ensuring that peace, prosperity and sustained progress reach all people, guided by the principles of people-centric governance,โ the Chief Minister said in a post on Facebook after the meeting.
The NDA government in Manipur is led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, with support from the National People’s Party (NPP) and the Naga People’s Front (NPF), besides Independent MLAs.
The meeting comes amid renewed mobilisation by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), which organised a statewide rally in Imphal on April 25. The protest turned tense, following which a memorandum was submitted to the state government.
COCOMI convener Y.K. Dhiren said the organisation would intensify its agitation if โtangible actionโ is not taken on its demands. He also asserted that no meaningful resolution has been achieved since the ethnic violence erupted in the state in 2023.
A delegation of the group met the Chief Minister and submitted a seven-point memorandum outlining its key demands. The Chief Minister said some of the issues raised were โdelicateโ but assured that efforts were being made to address them.
COCOMI has sought immediate arrests in connection with the April 7 projectile attack in Tronglaobi, in which two children were killed. It has also demanded scrapping of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki militant groups, a rehabilitation plan for internally displaced persons (IDP), and a high-level inquiry into a recent CRPF firing incident that left three persons dead. The group further called for concrete action against alleged ‘narco-terror’ activities.
The April 25 rally was described by COCOMI as part of a โfinal round of calibrated agitationโ over the lack of progress in resolving the crisis.
