Imphal: At least three people were killed and several others injured after CRPF personnel allegedly opened fire during a protest at Tronglaobi in Manipurโs Bishnupur district on Monday, sources said.
The incident took place at Tronglaobi Maning in the Gelmon area, where a large crowd had gathered outside a CRPF camp following a recent projectile attack by suspected Kuki militants, in which two minor siblings were killed and their mother critically injured.
According to eyewitnesses, protesters accused security forces of failing to prevent the attack and alleged that armed groups were being allowed to operate from nearby areas.
Tension escalated when sections of the crowd reportedly attempted to force their way into the camp, leading to clashes. Eyewitnesses also claimed that some barracks and vehicles inside the camp were damaged during the unrest.
As the confrontation intensified, CRPF personnel opened fire to disperse the crowd, resulting in casualties.
At least three people were reported killed on the spot, while several others sustained injuries. The wounded were shifted to nearby hospitals in ambulances and private vehicles, with some of the critically injured later referred to Imphal for advanced treatment.
Officials were yet to confirm the exact number of casualties at the time of filing this report.
The incident comes amid widespread unrest triggered by the suspected projectile attack in Tronglaobi that killed two children and left their mother seriously injured.
Protests were reported from several parts of the state, including Moirang, Pangei, Mantripukhri, Lilong and areas along Tiddim Road.
In Imphal city, demonstrators blocked roads at multiple locations, including Checkon, Keishamthong, Kwakeithel, Singjamei and Khurai, allowing only emergency vehicles to pass.
With tensions escalating, the Manipur government suspended internet services in five districts โ Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur , for three days from 2 pm on April 7, 2026.
The suspension covers mobile data, broadband, VSAT and VPN services.
