North Lakhimpur: Prominent legal practitioner, social worker, and senior advocate Sirajul Islam Hazarika passed away on Monday night after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 78 years old.
Popularly known as Jewel, Hazarika was a widely respected public figure in North Lakhimpur. At the time of his death, he was actively serving the judiciary as the Public Prosecutor.
Born in 1948 to Anjub Ali Hazarika and Safatun Nisha Hazarika, he completed his matriculation at North Lakhimpur Govt. Higher Secondary School and earned his undergraduate degree from North Lakhimpur College, now North Lakhimpur University. He went on to pursue his law degree from University Law College, Gauhati University.
Hazarika officially enrolled as an advocate at the North Lakhimpur Bar in 1979. Over a legal career spanning more than four decades, he held various leadership positions within the legal fraternity.
He also contested the 1985 Assam Assembly election from the 111 Lakhimpur LAC following the signing of the Assam Accord.
Earlier on Tuesday, Hazarika’s mortal remains were brought to the premises of the North Lakhimpur Law Association, where fellow advocates and members of the legal fraternity gathered to pay floral tributes.
Later in the afternoon, his Janaza was performed at the North Lakhimpur Kabarstan, attended by a large gathering of well-wishers from across communities.
Hazarika leaves behind a son and a daughter. His sudden demise has triggered grief, with condolences pouring in from social, political and legal circles in Lakhimpur.
