Manipur: Women unite against drone bomb attacks

Imphal: A Joint Action Committee (JAC) has refused to accept the dead body of a woman who was killed in a drone attack in Manipur.

The JAC refused to accept Ngangbam Surbala’s body despite the Chief Minister having given assurance to the former demands.

The JAC is demanding to translate the assurances into reality first.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh and representatives of the JAC have a meeting at the CM’s secretariat on Wednesday.

During the meeting, the JAC convenor Ningthoujam Popilal submitted an eight charter of demands.

The demands included the government conducting an immediate operation against the militants responsible for the attack and arresting all “terrorists” involved in Sunday’s attack at Koutruk as early as possible.

They also demanded the central government to withdraw the Suspension of Operation (SoO) with Kuki militant outfits and remove Assam Rifles from the Koutruk and its adjoining villages inhabited by the Meities.

Their demands also included the deployment of adequate state forces in Meitei villages located in foothills and fringe areas.

Another demand included the government taking full responsibility for the family of the deceased.

In this connection, the CM informed the JAC to collect the body of the killed lady after a post-mortem examination.

The JAC, however, announced that it would accept the body after the assurance given by the Chief Minister had been translated into reality.

Meanwhile, Manipur CM N Biren Singh in a social media post wrote, “Had a meeting with the members of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in response to the tragic and brutal killing of (L) Ngangbam Surbala Devi by the Kuki militants at Koutruk.”

He added, “The grief and frustration felt by the community are deeply understood, and the Government is committed to taking necessary steps to address these issues promptly and effectively.”
