Guwahati: The death toll in floods in Assam rose to 47 on Thursday after six more people died over the past 24 hours, while the number of affected people increased to over 7.21 lakh across 11 districts, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
The latest fatalities included four deaths in Sivasagar district and two in Charaideo.
ASDMA said the floods have affected more than 7.21 lakh people across 37 revenue circles and 883 villages in Golaghat, Hojai, Kamrup, Charaideo, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Nagaon, Kamrup (Metro), Karbi Anglong and Tinsukia districts.
Sivasagar remains the worst-affected district, with nearly 3.75 lakh people impacted, followed by Charaideo with 1.86 lakh and Jorhat with around 1.15 lakh. On Wednesday, the number of affected people stood at 6.43 lakh across 10 districts.
A total of 103 relief camps are sheltering 24,124 displaced people, while 255 relief distribution centres are providing assistance in affected areas.
The floods have also inundated 25,375.44 hectares of agricultural land, causing extensive damage to standing crops.
Several rivers continued to flow above the danger level on Thursday, including the Burhidihing at Khowang in Dibrugarh district, Kikhor and Disang at Nanglamuraghat in Sivasagar district, Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat district, and the Kushiyara in Sribhumi district.
The disaster management authority also reported damage to infrastructure from several parts of the state as the flood situation remained critical.
