A six-member team of the Employment Review Committee of Assam Legislative Assembly arrived in Digboi on Monday as a part of its two-day tour to review the process of employment in the oil sector.
The visit of the Assembly panel was also to know the status of the vacant posts in various private and public sectors including the oil, gas, coal industries and fertilizer plants in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts.

“Based on the resolutions adopted at the Assembly to ensure at least 85% of employment to local bonafide candidates of Assam in grade III and IV strata in the various secondary sectors, we have arrived here,” Prithviraj Rava, who led the panel said while addressing the media at the AOD guest house on Monday afternoon.
He said, “We will review all pros and cons related to the subjects during their talks with the AOD management this evening.”

He was accompanied by a host of MLAs including Suren Phukan, Manab Deka and Diganta Barman along with R. Bhattacharya, joint secretary of the Assam Legislative Assembly and other joint secretaries and under secretaries of various departments of Assam.
“We strongly advocate the idea of providing employment to the indigenous Assamese youths, if not in Grade-I & II, but at least in Grade-III & IV posts,” Rava said adding, “We would see how and why the local youths are long been deprived of it.”

In reply to queries on the alleged denial of employment at Indian Oil Corporation, Assam Oil Division in spite of having requisite eligibilities of indigenous Assamese candidates, Rava said the review panel would generate the response of the authority on the mode of appointment and other related criteria for employment in AOD unit.
“Besides considering the employment-related aspects in various private and public sectors, we would also review every pros and cons of the performances under CSR initiatives of the AOD Digboi and others,” said Digboi MLA Suren Phukan, a member of 13-member penal.
“We have been constantly receiving various allegations raised by local organizations over a period of time regarding the anomalies in respect of employment and denial of opportunities to local deserving youths of Assam and Digboi in particular,” added Phukan.
Meanwhile, Nikhil Koch, a member of the central executive committee of AASU in a press communique warned the AOD authority to ensure 100% preference of local youths in the written examination slated to be held on October 24, 2021 for the post of non-executive personnel.
“Failing to do so, be ready to face the consequences,” the AASU leader cautioned.
