Renowned economist from Assam, Dr Jayanta Madhab passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati on Monday midnight.

He was 91.

Dr Madhab, who had heart ailments, was also suffering from diabetes.

He died at Apollo Hospital in the city.

On October 5, he was admitted to GNRC Hospital.

On October 17, Dr Madhab was admitted to Apollo Hospital, where he passed away last night.

He graduated from JB College in Jorhat with honours in economics and did his MA from Gauhati University.

Madhab, who was a talented student, earned his doctorate degree in financial management from London School of Economics.

Dr Jayanta Madhab worked as the financial adviser to the Calcutta Metropolitan Development Corporation.

The economist served as a director at the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

He also played a significant role in the field of skill development in Assam.

Dr Madhab was also the founder chairman of North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NEDFi).

He served as the economic advisor to the Assam government from 2003-2009 during the tenure of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi.

The mortal remains of Dr Madhab have been taken to his residence at Kharghuli in Guwahati.
