Ronny Roy, senior photojournalist of Bengali daily Aajkaal died of suspected COVID-19 on Friday.

Family members informed that he was complaining of shortness of breath when stepped out of the house in the morning.

Roy is the first suspected COVID-19 death in the media fraternity.

It may be stated here that the Press Council of India (PCI) on Wednesday expressed “grave concern” over the large number of journalists contracting COVID-19.

The PCI urged the Centre and the media houses to help the COVID-19-infected journalists.

“It is sad to know that a large number of journalists have contracted the coronavirus while on duty,” the PCI said in a statement.

The PCI further appealed the government and all other authorities to help the infected journalists by providing medical help and required support to mitigate their hardships.
