Noted artiste and a dedicated socio-cultural activist of historic Tezpur town, Pankaj Bordoloi passed away at Times Hospital, Tezpur after a prolonged illness on Friday.

Late Bardalai was suffering from cancer and had been undergoing treatment for the last two years.

As his condition worsened on Thursday evening, he was immediately admitted to the Times Hospital here.

However, he breathed his last at around 12.15 am on Friday.

He was 60.

He was born on December 24 in 1960 to Haren Bordoloi and late Maniki Bardalai of Bindukuri-Kothalguri Tea Estate in Sonitpur district.

Bordoloi, after completion of his schooling in a local school, graduated from Darrang College here.

Besides his academic line, Bordoloi, who was fond of music, could carve a niece in society as a perfect musician and artiste.

Along with his own creation, he also worked for the preservation of the songs by Assam’s cultural icons Bishnu Rabha and Jyotiprashad Agarwala and tried to present it in a new form before the modern artistes.

A talented artiste, late Pankaj Bordoloi was also a good badminton player.

Despite his poor health condition in the later part of his life, he did not leave to work as an artiste.

He acted in singer-actor-producer Zubeen Garg’s recent movie – ‘Kanchanjangha’.

He also acted in the Assamese movie ‘Grahan’.

He was closely associated with a number of socio-cultural organizations including Kolabhumi, Ban Theater, Tezpur Sports Association, Nupur Nityangana, a cultural platform and Sanskar Bharati.

Rich tributes were paid to the artiste by different organizations including Darrang College, Sonitpur Press Club, Sonitpur Journalists’ Union, Ban Theater, district administration, Tezpur Sahitya Sabha, Tezpur AASU, and many admirers.

The last rites of the artiste were performed at Parwa Rajahwa Smashan on Friday.

Bordoloi is survived by his wife and a daughter.

 Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has also condoled the death of eminent singer, lyricist, music composer Pankaj Bordoloi.

In a statement on Friday, chief minister Sonowal said, “Pankaj Bordoloi, who lent his artistic calibre in multidimensional facets right from singing to acting, enriched the cultural landscape of the state with his contributions.”

He popularised ‘Jyoti Sangeet, ‘Rabha Sangeet’ among the younger generations. Even during Assam Agitation, he motivated the people by his cultural acuity.

His death is an irreparable loss to the society.

“I convey my sympathy to the bereaved family members and pray to the Almighty for eternal peace of the departed soul”, the chief minister added.
