Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organization (CoMSO) on Friday said the new Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2019 is not acceptable.

CoMSO chairman Robertjune Kharjahrin said the entire state of Meghalaya is not exempted from the CAB.

CoMSO is a conglomerate of several groups in Meghalaya.

“Only three tribal areas of Assam are exempted. Manipur is entirely under CAB. The non-tribal areas of Tripura are not exempted,” he said.

“Meghalaya is a state without an ILP system. The Governor did not give his assent to the MRSSA amendment ordinance, 2019, so Meghalaya will be a safe haven for Bangladeshi original who became Indian citizen through the CAB,” Kharjahrin said.

He said that the clause that decreased the number of the year from 11 years to 5 years in order to enable the Bangladeshis to get citizenship by naturalisation still remained and this has not been exempted.

“Now any Hindu Bangladeshis who came to India, after 5 years they will be Indian citizens. It’s just a matter of five years where the 2 crore Bangladeshis Hindu and others will become Indians,” he said.

Kharjahrin said, “It is on this point that CoMSO rejects the citizenship amendment bill, 2019 and demand that this bill should not be passed.”
