Guwahati: The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the release of Prabir Purkayastha, NewsClick Editor after hearing his plea, challenging the arrest by Delhi Police in a Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case.

A bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta said that the Remand copy was not provided and this vitiated the arrest and the arrest is ‘VOID’.

According to reports, a bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta delivered the verdict, after having concluded arguments on April 30.

Here it may be recalled that the NewsClick Editor has been in custody since October 2 last year under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The court also expressed surprise at the fact that the remand order was passed before the remand application was served on Purkayastha’s lawyer.
