The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested as many as 9 Indian fishermen along the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) between India and Sri Lanka.

The 9 Indian fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan navy on charges of allegedly violating the IMBL and crossing over to the Sri Lankan waters.

The Sri Lankan Navy also seized one mechanised boat used by the arrested 9 Indian fishermen for allegedly fishing in that Country’s waters.

The arrested Indian fishermen have been identified as Kirubai (37), Valan Koushik (24), Micheyaas (30), Kingston (28), Sam Stiller (21), Nijaan (30), Brighton (22) and 2 others.

Personnel of the Sri Lankan Navy also damaging fishing nets in a separate incident, officials said.

The Sri Lankan Navy personnel also allegedly pelted stones and hurled bottles at the Indian fishermen.

The fishermen were arrested near Neduntheevu, an island in the Palk Strait in northern Sri Lanka on Saturday.

The arrested fishermen have been reportedly taken to a camp in Kankesanthurai, Sri Lanka.

As per official records in India, a total of 45 fishermen and 5 boats have been arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy in less than a month.

Meanwhile, leaders of the fishermen associations in the coastal areas of India have condemned the Sri Lankan Government for arresting fishermen.

The fishermen associations claimed that the arrested fishermen did not violated the IMBL.

The fishermen associations have urged the Centre as well as the Tamil Nadu Government to take necessary and immediate steps for the release of the arrested fishermen.

The fishermen in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu have resolved to remain off the sea till the release of the arrested Indian fishermen.
