The Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) and Garo National Council (GNC) have decided to back Congress candidate Mukul Sangma in Tura seat in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Speaking at a meeting at Ruga Doni Bajar in Chokpot on Friday, GHSMC chairman Nikman Ch Marak said they would not support NPP candidate Agatha Sangma in Tura as her father late PA Sangma had lied to them.
“Late PA Sangma raised the issue of separate Garoland state only once in parliament and remained silent. In the last elections, we supported NPP but this time we will not extend support to NPP candidate Agatha Sangma as her father late PA Sangma had lied to us. We will not allow them to fool us again,” said GHSMC chairman Marak.
Congress has fielded former chief minister Mukul Sangma while NPP has nominated Agatha as candidate for the Lok Sabha polls in Tura.
He further said that if NPP wins, it would help the BJP to bring in the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill again, as the party is an ally of the NDA government.
“So we have decided to extend our support to Congress candidate Mukul Sangma this time,” Marak added.
Earlier, Congress MLA from Chokpot constituency held a meeting with the members of Garo National Council.
