Imphal: The National Sports University (NSU) will host the All India Inter-University Thang-Ta (Men and Women) Championship 2026โ€“27 at the indoor stadium of Khuman Lampak Sports Complex from October 26 to 28.

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh is scheduled to attend the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest on October 26 at 4 pm.

NSU Vice-Chancellor Daljit Singh Chaudhary announced the details during a press briefing, stating that the championship is part of the annual sports calendar of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

According to university officials, 31 universities have registered for the competition, which is expected to bring together around 350 student-athletes from different parts of the country.

Chaudhary highlighted the cultural significance of Thang-Ta, the traditional Manipuri martial art that involves the use of a sword (Thang) and a spear (Ta). He described the discipline as an important part of Manipurโ€™s living cultural heritage, reflecting values of courage, discipline and tradition.

He said hosting the championship at the national level would give participants from other states an opportunity to experience Manipurโ€™s cultural traditions while competing in the sport.

The university has invited members of the public and the media to attend the opening ceremony and witness the championship.

The three-day event is expected to provide a platform for university-level athletes to compete in Thang-Ta while promoting the traditional martial art beyond Manipur.
