The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday issued notices to Tripura chief secretary and Director General of Police over reports of the rape and murder of a minor in Agartala.

Calling for a detailed report in the matter, the NHRC asked the authorities to submit reports within four weeks including the status of the investigation and any relief granted to the kin of the deceased.

The NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports that a minor victim of sexual assault was set on fire by assailants.

“It has not been mentioned in media reports whether the aggrieved family and the victim approached the police with their complaints,” the NHRC said.

“However, the death of a minor girl as a result of one barbaric act done by the accused is a matter of grave concern,” it added.

Reiterating its displeasure towards increasing incidents of sexual assault of women across the country, the Commission has said that it is awaiting reports from all the States and UTs.

According to the reports, the victim was kidnapped by the accused from her residence and was subjected to sexual abuse.

Later, the accused raised a demand of Rs 5 Lakhs in lieu of solemnizing marriage with the victim.

Some amount of money was reportedly paid by the family and there was a dispute between the family of the victim and the accused of the remaining money.

The accused and his mother have reportedly been arrested by the police after the incident.
