The Tripura Government is planning to construct Northeast India’s tallest building in the Old Central Jail complex of Agartala.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, accompanied by State Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath and officials of different concerned departments visited the Old Central Jail complex and held a high level meeting.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Deb revealed the idea to construct a 20-storey building in the vacant complex.

It may be mentioned that the Old Central Jail complex of Agartala has been lying vacant since the shifting of the Central Jail.

The Tripura Government is planning to construct the tallest building in the vacant complex as a part of the Smart City project.

As per the plan, two parallel buildings are supposed to be constructed in the vacant complex.

While one building will be an Information Technology Hub, the other building will fulfil the housing requirements of the proposed hub.

Earlier, during the rule of the previous Left Front Government, an English medium science college was planned to be constructed in the Old Central Jail complex.

However, after the BJP-IPFT Government came into power, the plan to construct an IT hub emerged.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb is of the opinion that the State has huge potential for development of an IT sector due to its geographical location.

The Tripura Chief Minster also thinks that it would be best to turn the vacant space of the earlier jail complex into an IT hub.

On his Twitter handle on Wednesday, the Tripura CM stated that his Government is committed to make Tripura a digital State.

He tweeted on Wednesday: “Committed towards making a Digital Tripura.”

Informing about the review meeting of the IT department, Chief Minister deb tweeted: “Reviewed various projects being undertaken by the IT Department in a review meeting held in Agartala today.”
