AGARTALA: The Tripura unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday (May 23) accused opposition parties of spreading misinformation about the citizenship amendment act (CAA).
Tripura BJP clarified that CAA will not be implemented in areas governed by the sixth schedule of the Constitution of India and inner line permit (ILP) regulations.
This assurance follows a memorandum submitted by the tribal wing of the Congress party to Tripura chief secretary JK Singh, expressing concerns over the potential implementation of the CAA.
The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), which has ruled Tripura for approximately 35 years, also voiced apprehensions regarding the act.
“The opposition parties are trying to mislead people regarding the CAA. The Act is very clear about providing citizenship to minorities fleeing religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan,” Tripura BJP chief Rajib Bhattacharjee stated.
He stated that the CAA would not be enforced in areas where the sixth schedule and ILP are in place, ensuring these regions are protected from any adverse effects.
Bhattacharjee reassured that the implementation of the CAA in Tripura would not negatively impact the state’s socio-political landscape.
“We strongly condemn the opposition parties’ efforts to oppose the CAA. We appeal to the people not to be swayed by their negative campaign,” he added.
However, TIPRA, an ally of the BJP-led coalition government in Tripura, has firmly opposed any move to grant citizenship to refugees and resettle them in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) area.
The CAA aims to provide Indian citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Jain, Parsi, and Buddhist minorities, who have fled religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan and sought refuge in India before December 31, 2014.
Tripura shares an 856-km-long border with Bangladesh and is surrounded by the neighbouring country on three sides.
