Animal sacrifice in Tripura temples resumed on Sunday after an interim order of the Supreme Court.

Animal sacrifice was carried out at Tripurasundari Temple in the State on Sunday, however, with certain restrictions.

On Sunday, around 30-40 goats were sacrificed at the Tripurasundari Temple.

Officials said the practice was begun again as per an interim order of the Supreme Court.

It may be recalled that on September 27 last, the Tripura High Court had banned animal sacrifice in the temples across the State with immediate effect.

Notably, the apex court on November 8 last admitted a special leave petition filed by the State Government on this issue.

The apex court also granted an interim order that says slaughter of animals will be allowed if it is done as per certain restrictions in accordance with law, according to reports.

Animal sacrifice at the Tripurasundari Temple was resumed with permission from the Gomati district magistrate.

As per set protocol of the Mata Tripurasundari Temple Trust, the district magistrate is de-facto shebait of the temple.

When the High Court had banned the practice, the head priest had on several occasions said it adversely affected puja at the temple.
