The body of a middle-aged ‘unidentified’ woman was recovered from the embankment of Manu River at Kamrangabari in Unakoti district in Tripura on Monday.

It is reported that the local people saw the body of the woman floating on the river and immediately informed the police. On receiving the report, the Kailashahar Police led by the Officer In-charge (OC) Shiva Chandra Dey and the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Pintu Debbarma along with the forensic team reached the spot and recovered the body with both hands tied. The police have sent the body for post-mortem to the district hospital till the time of filing of this report.

The cops suspect that since both the hands of the woman were tied, it could be a case of rape and then murder. However, the police have lodged a missing complaint and are further investigating the case.

Just before the Assembly polls in February in Tripura this year, which saw a tooth-and-nail struggle between the then Manik Sarkar Government and the saffron party, in which the latter won – the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had claimed that, according to crime stats, 86 per cent of the total crimes recorded in the State are against women.

The then Manik Sarkar Government had also decided to recruit more women police personnel and set up more all-women police stations to curb crimes against women.
