With increase in the incidents of rape of women and children across Assam, the students of Kokrajhar Government Law College and Kokrajhar Music Fine Arts College organized a peace rally in Kokrajhar on Wednesday seeking justice and safety of women and children in the State.

It may be mentioned that apart from other parts of Assam, a minor girl was also raped at Santinagar in Kokrajhar district.

The peace rally was started from Kokrajhar Law College premises and proceeded through Kokrajhar RNB Road, Bhagati Bhavan, Flyover, Hanuman Temple, Santinagar, Deputy Commissioner’s office and Kokrajhar town.

More than a hundred of students from both the colleges participated in the rally holding flags, banners, posters and shouting slogans. Seeking punishment of the rapists, the protestors shouted slogans like ‘rapists murdabad’, ‘rapists should be hanged’ and ‘provide safety and security for women and children in the State’.

Talking to reporters, Preeta Brahma, Principal In-charge of Kokrajhar Law College said the joint peace rally was organised against the increase in rape cases and against the recent rape of a minor girl at Santinagar in Kokrajhar. It may be mentioned that cases of rape and crimes against women have been on the rise across the country.

Brahma said, “Incidents of rape of women and children have been increasing frequently in our society. So we demand that steps should be taken to make the society free from incidents like rape.” She also said that the minor girls and women of the society should be saved from rapists.

One of the students of the Kokrajhar Law College said, “Being a law student, it is our moral responsibility to fight against any kind of injustice that is happening in the society. We also want quick action against the culprits involved in the rape of a minor which took place at Santinagar in Kokrajhar and demand justice for the victim.”

He also said that the victim should get all the treatment facilities for free and compensation of more than Rs 2 lakh should be provided to her.
