The All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) is seeing red over certain segment of the community being “harassed” in the name of National Register of Citizens (NRC) update.

In a press meet held on Saturday at AAMSU’s headquarters in Guwahati, the students’ body advisor, Azizur Rahman, said, “Religious minority as well as linguistic minority people are being harassed in the name of NRC.”

He said that there are many instances where people filing claims and objections (read against linguistic and religious minority people) are totally at sea as to against whom they are filing objections and why.

“These people are filing claims and objections only because few local organisations are pressurising them,” Azizur remarked.

He cited the case of Chittaranjan Narzary and Durjoy Gayari of Kokrajhar district who had filed claims and objections against religious and linguistic minority people only at the behest of organisations like All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU).

“The dirty game plan of organisations like ABSU came to light only when Narzary and Gayari approached the Kokrajhar DC on May 2 last saying that they want to withdraw the claims and objections application filed against the religious and linguistic minority people,” the student leader shared.

Holding up a copy of the application, Azizur said that the duo revealed that they were “forced” by few office-bearers of the Narabari anchalik committee of ABSU to put their signatures on the application.

AAMSU is smelling a rat – the students’ body has said that few other organisations are also “ganging up” with ABSU to “harass the religious minority people”.

“Those who shout from the rooftops about solving the foreigners’ issue are in reality not sincere about solving the same. A certain section of people want to keep the foreigners’ issue alive which is why they are getting involved in such nasty deeds,” he remarked.

“On a single day, 3 lakh claims and objections applications have been filed. There is something very fishy going on,” he further remarked.

The AAMSU has demanded that the conspirators be identified and “strongly dealt with”.

They also demanded that the venue of NRC hearings should be set up close to the place where the applicant is presently living.
