Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday assured that no genuine citizens will be harassed after the publication of the final draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

In a statement issued by the Union Home Ministry, Singh said the final draft which is scheduled to be published on July 30 next is only a draft and that people can file claims and objections.

The statement quoted Singh as saying that there will be sufficient opportunity to seek ‘remedies under the law’.

Singh also stressed in the statement that no one will be kept in detention centre after the publication of the final draft of the NRC.

The Union Home Minister, through the statement also assured the people of Assam that the entire process of updating the NRC has been done in a totally ‘impartial, transparent and meticulous way’.

Rajnath Singh in the statement also said that the NRC is being updated in accordance with the Assam Accord signed on August 15, 1985, and is being carried out as per the directions of the Supreme Court, which is monitoring the entire process.

He further said that the Citizenship Rules provide the opportunity to any person who is not satisfied with the outcome of claims and objections to appeal to the Foreigners Tribunal.

The Union Home Minister also mentioned in the statement that the Assam Government has been asked to ensure that law and order is maintained after the publication of the final draft of NRC.
