Assam Congress on Tuesday alleged that NRC State co-ordinator Prateek Hajela has struck out five out of 15 documents listed for inclusion of names in the final NRC by following political dictation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Addressing media persons in Guwahati, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora questioned, “How can Prateek Hajela dare to submit an unconstitutional affidavit before the Supreme Court striking out five out of 15 listed documents?”

Demanding the Supreme Court to nullify the affidavit submitted by Hajela, Bora alleged, “There is secret understanding between the BJP and NRC co-ordinator Hajela.”

Lashing out at the BJP over ‘contradictory’ statements by the saffron party leaders regarding NRC, Bora alleged that the BJP has been playing a double-standard role since the beginning of the NRC update process.

“BJP, on one hand, termed the historic Assam Accord as the soul of the NRC, on the other hand, its national party leader said that the party is committed to grant Indian citizenship to the illegal migrants by implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016,” Bora said.

Being critical over BJP’s ‘false promises’, Bora said, “The BJP, which is known for its political stunt before election, has been misleading the people of the State. The BJP-led Government both at the Centre and State have failed to fulfil the promises made before 2014 Lok Sabha polls and 2016 Assembly polls.”

Terming the slogan ‘jati, mati, bheti’ of the saffron party as just a gimmick to polarise the votes during the last Assembly and LS polls campaign, Bora said, “The State Government is on its knee before the Centre now.”

Bora further claimed that Assam Congress has taken a firm stand on the NRC issue since the beginning for the interest of the indigenous people of Assam.

Stating that the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is power-hunger, Bora said, “If AGP is not covetous then the party should break coalition from the Government immediately. There is no reason to wait anymore.”
