Aizawl: The Mizoram police have launched rescue operations to bring back three women from the state who are stranded in Syria under severe hardship.
Initially sent as housemaids in November 2022, the women now face significant difficulties.
The Indian Embassy in Syria has alerted the Mizoram government about the situation.
On May 19, officials from the Indian Embassy and the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs convened to address the issue, resulting in a legal notice being served to the employers of the Mizo housemaids.
The Syrian placement agency initially demanded $2,500 per housemaid for their repatriation, in line with the contract agreement.
However, following intervention from the Indian Embassy and Syrian authorities, the agency has agreed to arrange replacements without requiring this payment.
Mizoram chief minister Lalduhoma and home minister K Sapdanga are closely monitoring the situation.
